EXCITING plans to provide a £1.2m outdoor sports complex, including a skate park, for Malmesbury's sports clubs and youngsters, were unveiled last week.

The newly-formed Worthys Sports Association (WSA), wants to put the complex on the Worthys, where the town's rugby and cricket clubs already play.

A planning application is currently being prepared and WSA is organising fundraising events to help rally the community behind the project.

Malmesbury's newly-elected deputy mayor Coun Jacky Martin, who chairs the WSA, said she was working to ensure clubs and youth of the town have new facilities for sport and leisure.

"Many of our sports clubs around the town have outdated, inadequate facilities," said Coun Martin. "Our clubs and youngsters want and deserve better."

WSA is still in negotiation with the landowner Michael Weaver over the lease but are hopeful an agreement will be reached.

The WSA Committee comprises representatives from the rugby, cricket and netball clubs, as well as the skateboarders and town council. It is hoped that as the project progresses, additional clubs will also wish to get involved.

Coun Martin said Malmesbury clubs are poorly served by their present accommodation.

The cricket club has three teams and only one pitch while the rugby club pitch was grazing land until last year.
