SALISBURY Racecourse chairman Michael Wates was celebrating on Satur-day after Passing Glance, the horse he co-owns with the Kingsclere Stud, won at Epsom on Derby Day, writes Mike Turner.
The horse, which runs in the famous colours of legendary Derby winner Mill Reef, was first past the post in the £43,500 Vodaphone Diomed Stakes just 80 minutes before Kieren Fallon landed the Derby for the second year running.
Passing Glance is trained by Andrew Balding, son of Mill Reef's trainer Ian at their Andover base.
The front runner won a thrilling Sovereign Stakes last August at Salisbury in what was the venue's richest race of the season.
Racing continues at Salisbury this weekend with another Sunday Family Day meeting which gets under way at 2pm with the Chas H Baker Maiden Fillies' Stakes.
Sure to be among the day's highlights is the venue's first Listed race of the season. The £35,000 Axminster Carpets Cath-edral Stakes at 3.35pm.
Gates open at 11am and admission is £16 (members), £10 (Tattersalls) and £5 (course).
