Canal enthusiasts are merging the local branches of the Wilts and Berks Canal Trust in a bid to accelerate the restoration of the waterway and encourage new recruits.

The Chippenham and Calne groups merged some years ago and now they will join with the Melksham branch.

The trust promotes the restoration of the Wilts and Berks Canal, which would link the Kennet and Avon Canal near Semington to the Thames and Severn Canal near Cricklade and the Thames near Abingdon, thus connecting Chippenham, Calne and Swindon.

Trust director and Melksham branch chairman Colin Fletcher said: "It is clear that we need to rename ourselves to reflect the steady expansion of our activities."

Members would vote at the annual meeting on a name change to reflect the enlarged group.

"All the branches have played an important part in publicising the charity and have physically restored sections of canal all around this part of Wiltshire," said Mr Fletcher.

Work parties are held on the second and last Sundays of each month when volunteers clear former towpaths and canalbeds and rebuild locks and bridges. Recently volunteers have made great progress restoring the waterway at Chaveywell Bridge in Calne and Pewsham Locks, Chippenham.

Monthly meetings and social events are also held.

Mr Fletcher said: "Each branch has achieved a great deal over the years. Almost everyone is now aware of our aims and objectives and the benefits of a restored canal.

"The merger of the local branches will consolidate our position and allow us to make even greater progress in bringing the Wilts and Berks Canal back to life."
