GAZETTE & HERALD: A 35-foot dragon, a trailer full of belly dancers and samba band will all be taking to the streets of Calne for Saturday's carnival procession.

This year the theme is The Elements and 11 floats plus a string of giant flowers and butterflies will be on display.

The procession will begin at 3.30pm in Lickhill Road and will move along North Street into the town centre led by town mayor Carol O'Gorman on foot.

The mayor will be followed by grandparent of the year John Parkinson and his wife and grandchildren in a car. They will be followed by the carnival royalty and the samba band.

The floats include an entry by a Calne belly dancing group who will be dancing on a trailer pulled by a tractor.

Dragons made in a series of community workshops will also be giving a fiery display. The whole procession should take one hour to reach the finish line at Station Road.

"It should be a great day and hopefully the weather will stay good," said committee chairman Jill Martin.

The procession will end in The Wharf where a fete will be held followed by a pig roast. This year there is a record number of 33 stalls. The evening will finish with a jazz night in Marden House.

Proceeding carnival day, there will be a carnival quiz with general knowledge questions in Marden House tomorrow at 7.30pm. Teams of four may enter at £4 per person. Places must be bought in advance from Bank House.

Carnival week got off to a flying start on Sunday when fine weather brought children out for the teddy bears' picnic on The Green.

It marked the birthday of the carnival teddy mascots Barney and George.

A selection of activities were available including a bouncy slide, nursery rhyme hunt and face painting.
