SPEED cameras will soon be operating at three new sites in Swindon.

Each of the new mobile camera sites has a history of collisions in which people have been seriously injured.

They are on the A4259 near Coate, the A419 near Covingham and on the B4006 Marlborough Road.

However, exact figures for how many accidents there have been at each site are not being released by the Swindon and Wiltshire Road Safety Partnership.

David Frampton, manager of the safety partnership, said: "Each of these places has a history of collisions in which people have been killed or seriously injured.

"In addition, there's a history of speeding at each of these sites."

As well as the three new sites in the town, there will be another six located across the county.

Mr Frampton said that since the mobile cameras had been operating in the county there had been a 73 per cent reduction in the number of casualties.

There are currently five fixed camera sites across the Swindon area, and a further 20 mobile camera sites, including ones in Wootton Bassett, Highworth, Wroughton and Cricklade.

The system uses video cameras attached to the back of a specially marked van. It records speeds for a one to two-hour periods before moving on to another site.

Last month the camera partner-ship announced Swindon was to get a further two cameras to catch drivers who jump red lights.

They will be brought in at the pedestrian crossing lights on Queen's Drive and at the junction of Park Lane and Dean Street near the Territorial Army Centre.
