With reference to the draft proposals for regenerating Devizes Market Place, the main thing I could see when I visited the exhibition was the plan to build more retail outlets and houses.

I agree we need a wider variety of shops, but haven't the consultants realised that people use cars to go shopping? Surely the main priority should be parking first, shops second. Perhaps we should utilise what we already have to the best advantage; that is, a multi-storey car park built on an existing car park out of sight of the town centre.

As for the proposed extension of the One Stop shop into the Market Place what a totally inane idea. To build a 60ft extension would destroy the whole ambience of our Market Place which, with its listed buildings and two noted monuments, is unique.

Surely the upheaval and public displeasure over the alterations to the Market Place some two years ago should have told somebody, somewhere, something.

The Kennet director of community services was quoted in the Gazette & Herald (June 3) as saying the exhibition is for people to say what they think of the consultants' proposals.

People will tell them, but will they listen? Furthermore, will they do what the majority of Devizes people want?
