COVINGHAM/NYTHE; CON GAIN:The Conservatives' first gain of the evening was Covingham and Nythe, which came in at 1.20am.

Winning candidate Dale Heenan became the youngest member on the council, aged 24.

The seat had been held since 1992 by outgoing Mayor Derek Benfield.

Without his high profile candidacy to pull in votes, Labour's support faltered under Patricia Spry.

One of the issues that could have helped bring the Tories extra support was the speed humps in Covingham Drive. The Tories have made much of ripping out the hated humps, while Labour delayed.

The Conservatives' successful efforts to move a skateboard park planned for Nythe to near the Oasis Leisure Centre might also have attracted extra support.

Coun Heenan said: "It's a tremendous result. It's been 25 years since we last had control of the council and it's a big event to be part of."
