IT is not surprising that there is apathy and a poor turnout at election time when candidates do little to identify themselves.

Having been a councillor in the past I take an interest in local matters and consider myself to be well informed.

However, this year we received only a Conservative and a Liberal Democrat newsletter which told us little about the candidates.

It was not until I arrived at the polling booth that I discovered the names of the other two borough candidates and what party they were standing for!

The opportunity of meeting a candidate nowadays appears non-existent.

Until candidates recognise that first of all they need to put in some useful work in their community and earn respect, put in the foot work at election time and remember to keep being involved all the year round will they drum up a bit of enthusiasm from the electorate.

Apathetic candidates lead to apathetic voters.
