Twelve teams contested the annual Swindon Primary Schools Kwik Cricket Tournament at the County Ground.

After over two hours of exciting cricket it was Ruskin and Wanborough who qualified for the final, with Ruskin finishing the victors after a tense final over.

Earlier the teams had split into three mini leagues, with each team playing three games against the other sides in their group.

The winners of each league then qualified for the semi-finals, along with the side identified as the best runners-up from the remaining nine teams.

All the schools had a great time on the day and the players (both boys and girls) received a certificate.

Goddard Park lacked experience which probably cost them their first game, but from then on looked one of the better sides.

Sevenfields brought a young side who showed great enthusiasm, and Shaw Ridge also fought hard despite being in one of the stronger groups. Eldene won their league, as did Ruskin and Wanborough.

The 'lucky losers' were Westlea, who were drawn to play a strong Ruskin side in their semi-final.

Westlea put up a spirited showing, but the batting of Nathan Hawkins was the difference on the day.

Similarly in the other semi, despite Eldene fighting hard all the way, it was the favourites Wanborough who came through.

In the final Ruskin had the edge, but if Wanborough had not lost a wicket in the final over they could still have won.

Ruskin and Wanborough now go on to represent the Swindon area at the county final on Friday at Devizes Cricket Club (12.30pm).

Sevenfields and Goddard Park will represent Swindon at the Year 5 boys competition at Taunton in July, date to be confirmed.

A girls' Kwik cricket competition will be held at Wanborough on July 7, with the winners going to the regional finals at Taunton.
