SOUTHERN Electric Power Distribution has announced a 4.1 per cent increase in operating profit to £199.4million for 2003/04.

The company has also reported that it has invested £98.7million in its underground and overhead electricity network during the same period.

Last year the average number of minutes of lost supply per customer in the Southern Electric area was 81, which compares with 82 minutes during 2002/03, excluding the October 2002 storm.

To improve performance in the area of supply interruptions caused by falling trees or branches hitting power lines, Southern Electric has started employing directly most of the people involved in tree cutting.

Chief executive Ian Marchant said: "I am delighted that Southern Electric's electricity networks business has performed so well.

"We believe it is a key corporate responsibility to maintain a safe and reliable supply of electricity and to minimise interruptions to that supply."
