THE latest report on the fire ravaged Locarno Corn Exchange Tower, EA June 3, mentioned the fact that on removal, one of the bells was found to have been cracked; this was presumed to have been caused by the fire.
Most old Swindonians however, will remember that when the clock was working, one of the bells always produced a dull 'clank' and this is going back 60 years or more.
It was always supposed that one of the bells was cracked, now we know for sure.
It was always one of my greatest desires to see this clock working again and hear it chiming the hours, with or without the clank.
Regrettably after this latest incident, this is one dream that is unlikely to be coming true.
