THE village school in Woodborough has come through an Ofsted inspection with almost top marks.

The only thing the inspectors picked up on during their two day visit in April was that assessment procedures needed improving.

Another point noted by the inspectors about inadequate use of computers had already been identified in the school's development plan.

A school spokesman said: "Plans for future spending on a mobile ICT suite should ensure that cross-curricular use of ICT will feature strongly in pupils' learning very soon."

The inspectors praised the 124-pupil school and its management saying "it is a very good school with some excellent features that is led and managed very well by the headteacher, the committed staff and a conscientious governing body who all work together as an excellent team within a very Christian ethos".

The report said standards were good in English, maths and science and praised the pupils' attitudes to learning, which they said were good.

The quality of teaching, the report said, was good overall and frequently very good.

Leadership by the head, Hazel Jones, was very good. The report said: "The headteacher has an excellent educational vision that is focused upon ensuring that all pupils do as well as they possibly can.

"She provides calm and very effective leadership, working in close partnership with the staff and an excellent set of governors who are conscientious and rigorous in their approach to the management of the school."

The report referred to the last inspection and said: "The school has improved considerably since 1998 and rectified five key weaknesses that were identified.

"The progress of pupils in years 1 and 2 are much improved and teachers' expectations of the most capable pupils are far higher than they were at the time of the last inspection.

"The quality of teaching is now good overall and the provision for information technology and music have been improved well.

"These significant improvements have helped to push up standards generally and made sure that pupils are challenged sufficiently."
