That winning feeling. Frankie Dettori and Dawn Surprise after a comfortable victory. Staff pictures by LARA BALL. DA5768P08.FRANKIE Dettori had Ascot on his mind on Sunday when he celebrated a stunning victory in the day's second race at Salisbury with a trademark leap from 11-10 favourite Dawn Surprise.
Their five-length win was greeted with huge cheers from a bumper crowd of more than 5,000 basking in the sunshine at the track for its second Sunday family meeting of the season.
Dettori, resplendent in the royal blue of Godolphin, usually reserves his flying salute for Group One successes, but obliged after being urged on by delighted punters who had gathered near the winner's enclosure.
The meeting had begun with a thrilling Autecnique Alfa Romeo Rated Stakes which saw Mick Channon's Le Tiss get the nod in a three-way photo finish with Tudor Bell and Coventina.
Another favourite, Moss Vale showed his class in the day's listed race, the Axminster Car-pets Cathedral Stakes.
Racing continues at the Netherhampton course next week when its historic two-day Bibury Meeting starts on Wednesday.
The £25,000 Bibury Cup mile and a half handicap takes centre stage on the opening day at 3.10pm.
The six-race card gets underway at 2.10pm, while Thursday boasts seven races including the £20,000-added Piper Heidsieck Cham-pagne Auction Stakes.
Admission is £5 (course), £10 (Tattersalls) and £16 (Members).
