GAZETTE & HERALD: Redevelopment plans for three sports sites in Calne have been drawn up following consultation with local groups.

PMP Consultants, hired by Calne Town Council, have planned sports facilities at Beversbrook, Bremhill View and Anchor Road Recreation Ground.

The plans will now be submitted to North Wiltshire District Council for outline planning permission at a cost of £6,750 to the town council.

"We have some funding but we now need to look at getting more to get this off the ground," said town mayor Carol O'Gorman.

The plans include facilities for cricket and football at Beversbrook.

Anchor Road would get an improved rugby pitch and a multi-use games area, which could be used as a third tennis court.

Proposals for Bremhill View include a multi-use games area and equipment for toddlers and older children in the existing play area.

The town council has wanted to improve sports facilities in Calne for a number of years.

Town clerk Ann Kingdon said the additional facilities were badly needed.

"The benefit to both the community and the environment from such a scheme is incalculable," she said.

The council also believes that encouraging sport may help reduce anti-social behaviour.

Implementing the new facilities could cost millions and the council will need large grants from outside bodies.

In September the council made a bid for a £2million Government grant for recreational facilities.

This coincided with the Big Baton Challenge when, for the first time, a world record for passing a baton along a human chain was made.

Although the bid was unsuccessful, the event raised the profile of the town.
