FOR the first time in its history, the Devizes-based White Horse Opera company is raising money for charity with its forthcoming concert in the town hall on June 30.
It is hoping to raise hundreds of pounds to support the work of the Mathieson Music School in Calcutta, India, a school for orphans and very deprived children, which has a unique emphasis on music.
The concert features internationally renowned cellist Anup Biswas, who founded the school in memory of Father Theodore Mathieson, who died in 1994, and ran an orphanage in Calcutta for over 50 years.
At the age of 16, Mr Biswas was sent by Father Mathieson to the Royal College of Music in London, which paved the way for his flourishing international career.
The concert will feature White Horse Opera regulars Pamela Rudge, Edward Harper, with musical director David Price on the piano. Tickets at £12 are available from Devizes Books in Sidmouth Street on (01380) 726922.
White Horse Opera is preparing for its annual production, Bizet's Carmen, and want more tenors and basses for the chorus. Contact operafriends@yahoo.co.uk
