FIREFIGHTERS are warning that bonfires can become infernos in the current spell of hot weather.
They are speaking out after having to tackle two recent bonfires which began spreading rapidly.
The first, in Pinehurst, spread to a large amount of garden waste and trees before being brought under control, while the second, in Park South, ignited a large area of grass and nearby shrubs.
Both blazes happened last Fri-day evening.
Leading firefighter Steve Bussell, who is based at Swindon Fire Station in Drove Road, said: "We would like to remind members of the public of the additional hazards of bonfires in the current spell of warm, dry weather.
"The risk of a controlled fire spreading rapidly is greatly increased, and both of these incidents could have resulted in more damage to property or even injury to life."
Wiltshire Fire Brigade has put together a list of safety tips for bonfires. They include:
Position on a level site away from wooden fencing, sheds, and hedges.
Don't light on a windy day and be considerate to neighbours.
Don't place on dry grass or vegetation and keep it small and under control.
Never use flammable liquids to start the fire.
Never leave a barbecue or bonfire unattended keep children well away.
Keep water handy to deal with any unexpected spread of fire.
Make sure alcohol doesn't affect your ability to act safely.
Take extra care when having campfires/barbecues in the countryside, as fire spreads very rapidly over open ground.
Remember, if clothing catches fire, stop, drop and roll.
