CHIPPENHAM NEWS: BUDDING young chefs aiming to be Chippenham's answer to Gordon Ramsay cooked up a feast for competition judges.
Michael Whylock, of Abbeyfield School became the first winner of the Rotary Young Chef competition with a meal for two of tagliatelle and chocolate mousse.
The event held at Hardenhuish Secondary School saw 14 young chefs spend over two hours preparing a meal to be judged by two leading restaurant experts.
Chippenham Rotary Club president Peter Loader said: "This is the first time that the Chippenham club has organised a young chef competition and as the evening has been such a success it should become an annual event."
The competition aimed to encourage young students to take pride in cooking and presenting a two-course meal.
The students, aged 13 and 14, were given only an hour-and-a-half to cook the meal.
Students from Hardenhuish School, Sheldon and Abbeyfield took part and had to make a meal for under £7.
The winner of the team event was a group from Hardenhuish School, who were presented with a bread maker.
The team included students Alice Spencer, Lewis Dolman, Claire Hambleton, Hannah Reynolds and Philippa Tyndall.
Judges were head chef Alan Starling and front of house manager Liz Wheeler, both from The Tynings restaurant at Wiltshire College.
They awarded marks for the choice of menu, planning, hygiene, cooking skills, use of time, presentation of table and taste.
