MARK KINSELLA is a Town target with Andy King admitting that he would love to strengthen his squad with a powerful 'box-to-box' midfielder.
The former Republic of Ireland international has been released by Premiership newcomers West Bromwich Albion, but King is keen to stress that a simple telephone call does not equal a done deal far from it.
And if all six out-of-contract players at the County Ground accept new deals then the Town boss will have no room left to manoeuvre in the transfer market as his budget will be used up.
There will only be the loan deal pot left to dip into.
King, who welcomed defender Jerel Ifil and striker Lloyd Opara to the County Ground yesterday, said: "I have spoken to Mark Kinsella who has yet to fix himself up with a club and he is going to give me a call when he returns from holiday in America.
"I feel the one area where I don't have the competition that I'd like is in midfield. I want someone to challenge Matty Hewlett and Stefan Miglioranzi.
"Jerel has given me another option at the back, while Lloyd offers a challenge to the other strikers.
"I would like to add a strong box-to-box player to the squad.
"Whether I am able to do anything about that remains to be seen.
"If all the players accept, there will be no funds left. Should any of them choose not to then I'm told those funds will be available.
"The conversation with Kinsella, and another Premiership player, was on the assumption that there would be funds.
"As I've said, that depends on the decisions of those who are deciding whether or not to stay."
Loan deals have proved a fruitful option for King in the past, with Ifil and James Milner both big hits last season, and if he is unable to bring in a midfielder on a permanent basis then he will look for a temporary solution.
He said: "That's an area I haven't looked at too much yet but there may be an opportunity to do something as part of the Leigh Mills deal.
"However, if you're going to take someone for a year then it has to be the right deal.
"The player himself will want to play and I don't want to bring someone in for the sake of it. That serves no purpose."
