28381/2SAFETY was at the top of the agenda at a Westbury school this week. Children at Westbury Leigh Primary School have spent the week learning about safety from the experts.
Headteacher Mary Murray said: "Safety is always paramount within the school but each year we have a week that focuses on safety and its importance for the children."
The police, fire and ambulance services and Wiltshire County Council's road safety officers have all been at the school this week.
On Tuesday the youngsters learnt all about stranger danger and road, rail and building site safety from the police.
The following day the fire service came to the school to teach the youngsters about the dangers of fire, giving a graphic demonstration of what happens if you use water to put out an oil fire and how to use a fire blanket.
Teacher Annie Wadman said: "It was very dramatic, not just for the children but also for the adults present to see what happens."
The children have also spent time learning about first aid and about the role played by paramedics.
All the pupils got the chance to have a look around an ambulance and learn what the equipment in the vehicle is used for.
Ms Wadman said: "They have had a wonderful time. They have really enjoyed it. It has provoked some very productive conversations about topics that you might not otherwise think to cover."
The children will be making the most of what they have learned this week with some follow-up work back in their classrooms.
