HUGS, kisses and handshakes could be seen in every direction when referee Valentin Ivanoe brought the game to a close.
Although few fans expected England to throw it away, many were nervous going into the game.
Laura Inglis, 21, from Wills Avenue in Greenbridge, said: "I was quite apprehensive before kick-off and throughout the first half.
"But when Rooney scored his second I knew it was in the bag."
Pals Jared Llewellyn, 26, and Barry Cobb, 24, were pictured dancing in Fleet Street.
"I am very happy with that result," said Barry from Morrison Street in Rodbourne. "It was a great performance.
And with Rooney's name plastered on the back of his replica shirt, there was little doubt, in his eyes, as to who deserved the man of the match award.
"Rooney was excellent," he said. "For someone of his age to be so fearless is amazing."
Jared, from Lynmouth Road in Rodbourne, reckons Rooney is going to smash all-records.
He said: "That player to going to be the greatest legend of all time. Watching Rooney was the highlight of the game for me."
