MY wife and I were passing the spot where the 10-year-old cyclist died at the Coate Water roundabout last Saturday. The police and ambulance arrived shortly after us.

As visitors to Swindon, and having travelling that same road the Sunday before, I remarked to my wife that for a road of this nature there were remarkably few crossing points for cyclists and pedestrians. In fact, I said it was an accident waiting to happen.

Part of the blame or root cause of the accident has to be laid at the door of the local planners for not doing sufficient risk analysis.
