YOUNG people who are using the internet are being urged to log onto Wiltshire police's website first to help them stay safe in chatrooms.
Wiltshire Constabulary launched the Who's Web Wise campaign in partnership with Wiltshire County Council, Swindon Borough Council and Fujitsu Siemens.
Youngsters aged 11-18 are being invited to complete an on-line quiz which highlights the importance of simple precautions.
More than 1,000 have taken part so far and there is still a chance to enter as the quiz is open until midnight on Wednesday, June 30.
As an added incentive, there is the chance of winning a Fujitsu Siemens personal computer for two winners and their schools.
Sergeant Roger Bull, from Wiltshire Constabulary's community safety department, said: "The internet can be fun and educational but it also allows the young access into an insecure world of cyberspace where they can communicate with strangers who may project a false image of themselves."
A countywide survey found 80 per cent of young people used the net, the vast majority accessed it from home or school, and that seven per cent had agreed to meet up with someone they'd met though a chat room without checking with their parents first.
