WHISKY dished out by generous friends put carpenter Michael Connolly nearly three times over the drink drive limit, magistrates heard yesterday.
Connolly, 57, had a level of 104 micrograms of alcohol in his breath when he gave a test at Westlea Police station, said Karen Boyes, prosecuting. The legal limit is 35. He was tested after police were called to a minor two-car crash on the Magic Roundabout. Connolly, of Firecrest View, Swindon, who had a clean driving licence, had been given whisky by friends, which had put him over the limit, he said. Connolly admitted drink driving and was banned from driving for 28 months. He was also fined £500.
His solicitor, Tony Novogrodski said the crash had been very minor and the only damage to the other car had been a scratch. But the driver had demanded £350 compensation from him or he would call the police. Connolly refused to pay and the police were called.
