Pundits have many and varied conclusions for what voters were thinking when we made our choices.

Their views must be as inaccurate as their predictions because every voter is an individual.

One opinion was that the war in Iraq lost voters for the Government.

This is disproved by the failure of all parties that opposed the war. There was plenty of choice of anti-war candidates. Their views were given massive prominence by the media.

In Swindon, Andy New-man is leader of the Stop the War Coalition. In spite of regular publicity he won even less votes than his usual handful. I would like to think that this result was helped by his reply to my previous letter.

He and Mrs Lubin both demonstrated total disbelief that anyone should be criticised for telling lies in furthering a political objective. I think it is a socialist commandment that the end justifies the means.

Some protest votes locally seemed to go to the Green Party.

Is this because Bill Hughes pretended to support environmental issues and not just his usual hard left doctrines?

If Andy Newman joined they could re-name them the Red Party.
