BROMHAM was awash with colourful floats and costumes as residents celebrated in the carnival procession on Saturday.

Many hundreds of people lined the streets to watch the procession as it set off from The Pound Field to the Jubilee Field by the Social Centre.

Carnival queen Sarah Fennell led the procession in a pony and trap followed by butterfly queen Sophie Watchman in an open top car. Carnival prince George Paget and princess Eleanor Sims followed in another vehicle.

The number of floats at seven was slightly down on last year but there were more walking entrants this year. Memories of wartime Britain were evoked for some with a float called The Land Girls and there was a gardening theme for a number of floats.

There are a number of categories for youngsters who enjoy dressing up and walking in the procession.

Also entertaining the crowds in the procession were Ramsbury Silver Band, Trowbridge Majorettes, Devizes Dazzlers Majorettes and Oi Sambistas! (Devizes Samba Band).

The procession reached the Jubilee Field just as a brief shower of rain fell.

On the Jubilee Field there were plenty of stalls while in the Social Centre cream teas were served.

Entrants in the carnival draw eagerly waited to see if they won the top prize of £200 or one of the other 34 prizes.

The barbecue did a roaring trade and several hundred beefburgers and hot dogs were sold.

Carnival stalwart Stuart Nash donned his apron for the last time as he has retired from the carnival committee after 26 years.

Lorna Heath, secretary of the carnival, said: "We didn't have as many floats as last year but each one was beautifully decorated and when we start planning next year's carnival events we will look at what we can do to increase the number of floats.

"However we had a good turnout of walking entrants of individuals and groups within the village. The atmosphere was wonderful. The whole village enjoys the carnival."

The carnival ended with a Songs of Praise service in St Nicholas Church.
