Wessex Water has advised drivers to avoid London Road, Devizes, as they begin the second phase of works to lay a new main along the A361.
Yesterday, queues of traffic built up on the approaches to the town, stretching down Caen Hill on the west side.
During the first phase of the work, between the Hopton and Cannings Hill roundabouts, serious congestion was avoided by diverting traffic through the Hopton Industrial Estate and Marina Meadows.
But no such option is available for the next phase from Hopton to the Coate Road roundabout and two-way traffic lights will be in operation for six weeks, when drivers are advised to avoid the area.
