GAS company Transco is to begin essential safety work to pipes in three busy Melksham streets on July 19 but will stop work so the town's carnival procession can go ahead in August.
The 15-week project is designed to improve the safety and security of the gas network by replacing the old metal pipes with plastic ones.
Temporary lights will control traffic in the High Street between Avon Place and Kavanagh's Estate Agents for about six weeks and the pedestrian crossing lights will be moved.
Signs will be put up on all main roads into Melksham to divert heavy traffic from the centre with Market Place, Spa Road and the High Street affected.
Transco project manager Andy Leach said: "We would like to apologise for any inconvenience during this essential work.
Transco said the work would help guarantee the town's demands for gas and reduce maintenance.
The new plastic pipes have a lifespan of more than 80 years.
