A TRAVELLING theatre group is helping to raise awareness of distraction burglars through a series of free shows in Wiltshire.
Wiltshire County Council is working with Wiltshire Constabulary and Age Concern to co-ordinate the performances, which contain a mixture of song, drama, information and humour.
The show will be performed by three professional actors and tells the story of George, an elderly gentleman who becomes the victim of a distraction burglar. After battling with the humiliation of being conned, George fights back to beat the bogus caller.
Sue Wilkin, Trading Standards senior adviser, said: "The aim is to raise awareness about distraction burglars without raising the fear of crime."
Sgt Roger Bull, from Wiltshire police, said: "Bogus callers often claim to be from utilities such as gas, water or electric companies and dress in a manner which may seem consistent. Genuine employees will wait outside while a homeowner makes a call to confirm identity."
The shows will be at the Corn Exchange, Devizes, on July 5 at 2pm; the Neeld Hall, Chippenham, on July 6 at 10am and at the Civic Hall, Trowbridge, on July 6 at 2pm. To book a free place contact Age Concern Wiltshire on (01380) 727767.
