YOUTH FOOTBALL: WESTBROOK AFC celebrated a record entry to their annual six a side tournament at Zurich at the weekend.
With the event, in its fourth successive year, brought forward from the usual August date, a bumper 91 teams were attracted.
Although the weather was not perfect, it did not dampen the spirits of all taking part.
On Saturday the Festival of Football took place for under sevens and eights.
Winning the sportsmanship awards were Blunsdon Colts under sevens and Oldland Abbotonians under eights.
All players were given a medal for taking part.
Sunday saw the competitive action begin, and local teams Stratton Juniors, Old Town and Westbrook all toasted success.
Stratton won the under 10s section, beating Ferndale Rodbourne 2-0 in the final.
In the under 12 section, Old Town clinched the title after winning 2-0 against Ferndale Rodbourne.
And there was penalty drama in the under 14s section as Westbrook won the shoot-out against Milton.
Blackbird Leys won the under nine section with a 1-0 win over Swindon Soccer Skills.
Tournament organiser Barbara Godsell was delighted with the turn out.
She said: "We decided to move the tournament from August to June this year and it paid off because we got a record turnout.
"Everybody seemed to have a fantastic time and we will repeat it next year at the same time and venue.
"We would just like to thank everyone for their support and the money raised will go a long way to helping the Westbrook youngsters next season."
