MODEST builder Chriss Burke is vowing that fame won't change him, despite being named the South and West region's Builder from Heaven.
Mr Burke, 58, of Patterdown, Chippenham, beat hundreds of builders in the competition run by builders' merchant, Jewson.
The company said it was Mr Burke's love for his job, his dedication and his ability to inspire youngsters in the industry that marked him out as the clear winner.
Mr Burke's apprentice, Craig Woodward, 32, and customer Linda Palmer, nominated him for the award.
Mr Woodward said: "No-one deserves it more. If he wasn't so good we wouldn't be so busy. He deserves some recognition for what he does."
But a modest Mr Burke shrugged off all the attention.
"I just do what I do and I love it," he said. "There's too many people who wake up in the morning and think, 'what am I doing?' but for me it's always different."
Customers seem to appreciate Mr Burke's work - there is a backlog of people wanting his services. He says the appreciation is the real motivation and it doesn't just come from adults. "We get hundreds of letters from kids saying thank you for my bedroom," he said.
