STRESSED youngsters are being offered relaxation classes at a Swindon sports centre.

The Baha'i faith's Tranquillity Zone, which is based at the Health Hydro in Milton Road, will be running a series of de-stressing sessions beginning next month.

The initiative follows the publication of a report last week by the World Health Organisation which concludes that depression is rife among young people.

All children aged eight and over are invited to take part.

Fidelma Meehan, Bah' projects manager, said: "Youngsters should be bursting with energy and enthusiasm.

"But they get burned out by the stress and pressures of modern life just as much as adults.

"According to this report, British teenagers have some of the highest rates of drinking, smoking, drug use and the lowest levels of life satisfaction.

"These are all symptoms of low self-esteem, which is why this issue must be dealt with in varied and creative ways."

The Family Tranquillity Zone includes visualisation, relaxation, inspiring stories and music, as well as time for a cup of tea and chat .

The 35-minute sessions will run on July 11 and 25 and August 8 and 22.
