VISITORS to Aldbourne library will now have improved access to Wiltshire's collection of historic photographs.

The village library will join 16 others from across the county to create a comprehensive catalogue detailing which images are held and where.

The 36,000 pictures in the Historic Photograph and Print Collection are divided between the reference libraries in Trow-bridge and Salisbury.

Visitors using the catalogue can check the availability via email or telephone without having to trawl the shelves.

Bosses hope eventually to make the catalogue available online with digital images.

Paul Connell, museums officer at Wiltshire County Council, said: "The collection is an important archive for Wiltshire, and the council is keen to increase access to it.

"By placing a catalogue of images in the county's libraries, people will be able to see what is available without having to first make a visit to Trowbridge or Salisbury.

"They can call ahead and make arrangements to view and copy the images they are looking for."

Many of the images date back to the early days of photography in the county.
