BIDDESTONE'S emergence as a cricketing force was further underlined on Friday when two of the club's junior teams reached county finals.

Victories for the under 15s over South Wilts and for the under 13s at Calne have seen the youngsters win through to their respective Wiltshire cup finals.

The under 15s now take on rivals Chippenham at Swindon's County Ground on Wednesday.

And the under 13s have the chance to get revenge on South Wilts who defeated them in last year's final when the sides face each other at Devizes on Thursday.

Biddestone under 15s raced to a six-wicket win over visitors South Wilts in a match that belied the gulf between the club's senior sides.

Openers James Glover (17) and Tom Pearce (22) put on 30 for the first wicket before Glover was bowled by Biddestone's Josh Barnes.

Only Chris Mann (18) added significantly to South Wilts' score as they reached 95-5 in their 20 overs. Alex Leadbetter (1-14) and Josh Taylor (2-23) and some excellent fielding helped keep the score below 100.

Barnes (27) was the top scorer in the village side's reply with support from Sam Boor (14) and Tom Needham (22). Chris Casey (18 not out) and John McIlhinney built on this platform to see Biddestone home with three overs to spare

The same day saw Biddestone's under 13 team pushed right to the wire in their game at Calne before securing a five run win.

The visitors' total of 92-3 meant they would have to bowl well to win and saw Calne enter the final over needing six to edge home. But James Harper held his nerve to concede just one run and seal a place in the county final.

Biddestone started positively through Tim Knight (21) and Mark Sawyer (31). Andrew Lawton added 23, but some tight bowling led by Luke Edwards looked to have given Calne a real chance of victory.

The home danger man was Wiltshire under 13 batsman Courtney Earl who had scored 150 against Biddestone earlier in the season. This time a boundary catch from Lawton off the bowling of Nat Jensen saw him out for 17 as the tide turned in the visitors' favour and Calne finished on 87-8.

Biddestone assistant coach John Lawton said: "We've got so many youngsters because our youth set up has been going well for five or six years.

"We are even thinking about running a fourth senior team next year as a result.

"The danger with all clubs is that once they move out of the under 15s there's nowhere for them to go.

"I think we've got a good mix with a friendly club atmosphere that gets people involved.

"In the county cup a batsman has got to declare once they have reached 30 so you need strength in depth. We change the batting order around and get all the kids playing."
