SHORT MAT BOWLS: ALMOST 200 short mat bowlers packed into the Christie Miller Sports Centre on Sunday for the Wiltshire association's summer open.

The Bowerhill venue hosted 48 teams from 10 counties across the south with some players coming from as far away as Essex.

In a sport largely played by retired people it was a 17-year-old who skippered the winning side to victory. Rising star Phillip Warr produced a sparkling performance to help Avon's Park Farm clinch the title as they won all their games with a 45 shot advantage.

Second place went to Herefordshire's Fownhope club who also finished with a 100 percent record and a 29 shot advantage.

The trophies were presented by Wiltshire Short Mat Bowling Association chairman David Gilbert.

He said: "All the teams today played to the highest standard.

"The games were keenly contested with some very tight finishes.

"The quality of bowling reflects how seriously this game is being taken by some very talented players."

Gilbert also thanked Bridgwater-based Whitehead Bowls who hosted an equipment sale and the sports centre staff for their co-operation and catering.

A raffle on the day raised £300, which will be divided between Macmillan nurses and the Wiltshire Air Ambulance.
