A COVERT traffic camera has revealed over 70 per cent of drivers are ignoring the speed limit on a busy Warminster road.

A Wiltshire County Council speed camera was positioned at the junction of Victoria Road and Perriwinkle Close on June 7 and 8 following complaints from concerned residents.

The camera revealed that of over 10,000 vehicles recorded, less than 3,000 were driving below the 30mph speed limit.

Cllr John Syme said: "These figures are disgraceful. Over 71.5 per cent of motorists ignored the 30mph limit with a handful driving at over 55 or 60mph.

"Those drivers who ignore the speed limit are inconsiderate and are putting people's lives at risk."

A spokesman for the county council said: "The traffic survey was carried out on request from the local county councillor and the results are in line with national statistics that reveal 60 per cent of drivers do not stick to the 30mph speed limit.

"Traffic calming for Victoria Road is on the list of measures to be part of the Warminster cycle network project.
