A BANKER is fighting calls for his extradition to the US to face fraud charges linked with the Enron scam.

Giles Darby, 41, of Lower South Wraxall, near Bradford on Avon, is accused of defrauding a subsidiary of NatWest Bank out of millions of pounds, in partnership with two executives from the failed US energy giant, Enron.

Two other UK men also stand accused and all three deny the charges.

The US Government wants them to be extradited to face seven counts of wire fraud in a Texas court.

They had hoped to stop the process in its tracks using British law but a judgement on Friday at Bow Street Magistrates' Court ruled the offences do qualify for potential extradition.

David Bermingham, 42, from Oxfordshire and Gary Mulgrew, 42, from Essex, are also accused.

In a statement issued by their solicitor Mark Spragg they said: "We are obviously disappointed at today's judgement but will continue to fight this case.

The three British men will present their case against extradition in a three-day hearing starting on September 28.
