28415ART and geography with a taste of acting have all come together at a village primary school.

Youngsters at Southwick School have been learning all about the different countries of the world and using acting, art and even cooking to help them learn about other cultures.

Teacher Paula Bartlett said: "We were doing geography focus, with classes learning all about Africa, India and Spain and we wanted to bring the arts into that."

As part of the school's arts week local actress Emma Holmes came in to work with each class to produce a short play.

Each class worked on a piece based around a country they had been studying in their geography work.

The pupils have also been cooking recipes and tasting food from other parts of the world, as well as getting the chance to talk to people from places such as Africa and China about the way of life in those countries.

On Thursday the youngsters got the chance to perform their work for parents at the school's open day.

Acting head Julia Bird has just returned from a trip to Zambia and the youngsters are now getting involved in raising much-needed funds for a school there.

Mrs Bartlett said: "Mrs Bird's experience has been really useful for the children. At this school they are trying to raise enough money to buy the children coloured pencils."

Today the Southwick children will be taking part in sponsored sporting including a six-aside football match in the afternoon.
