A "wheely" great world record was smashed by scores of Nationwide employees. Some 138 staff burned rubber when they took part in a sponsored tyre roll and gained their place in the history books.

The current record was held by a team of Canadians, who managed to roll 81 car tyres a distance of 100 metres.

The latest effort has raised hundreds of pounds for the Swindon Cancer Appeal.

The team had to roll the tyres by hand losing control meant disqualification.

The event took place at the company's sports ground in Piper's Way, Swindon.

Rosemary Callender, spokeswoman for Nationwide, said: "Everyone was elated with their achievement. It's great to have smashed the record by so much."

Nationwide has been a major supporter of the appeal, donating more than £100,000. So far the appeal has raised more than £389,000 to help people living with cancer in Swindon and Marlborough.
