A series of walking trails around Swindon is being drawn up by town centre managers in an attempt to boost civic pride.

Within the next couple of months the trails will feature on a website, along with notes for walkers

The first trail will focus on the town's Great Western Railway Heritage, taking in the Steam museum, the old railway works and the railway village.

The second will concentrate on the town centre, covering the former route of the canal and the trams that used to dominate the roads.

The trails are being designed by the New Swindon Company, Tourist Information, the Highways authority and Town Centre Management.

Once the website is running the next move will be to produce leaflets outlining the routes for the public.

It is hoped the trail will eventually consist of four walks and the creators are putting together a bid for cash from the Lottery's heritage fund to pay for signs along the routes.

"We want to help people understand and appreciate the rich history of the town from the time of Brunel and the railway works," said Jan Tierney, from the New Swindon Company.

As part of the research she would like to hear from anyone who knows anything about the history of the Indian Bean Tree, in Canal Walk, outside the entrance to BHS, and the Pearl Assurance House, in Regent Street.

She can be contacted on 01793 429253.
