THE eagerly-awaited Spider-Man sequel, set to open in Swindon next week, looks like it could break box office records after taking £85 million in its first five days in the US.

Filmgoers in Swindon are expected to flock to the town's two cinemas to watch nerd-turned-superhero Peter Parker return to battle evil in New York.

The film has already won rave reviews.

Parker, played by Tobey Maguire, abandons plans to hang up his spider suit and go back to normal life to do battle with the multi-tentacled Dr Octopus, played by British actor Alfred Molina.

"On box office, I'm just too superstitious to speculate. I just know we have a better movie," said Avi Arad, head of Marvel Studios and Spider-Man 2 producer.

The first Spider-Man, released in 2002, smashed records by taking £63.4 million in its opening weekend outselling previous record-holder Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone by nearly £14 million.

The UGC cinema at Shaw Ridge and Cineworld at Greenbridge are taking bookings ahead of the film's release on July 15.

Look out for an eight-page Spider-Man 2 supplement in next Wednesday's Evening Advertiser.
