POINTS problems at Wootton Bassett spelled delays for rush-hour train travellers.
Network Rail said the points malfunctioned shortly after 4pm yesterday.
It took just over an hour for the fault to be repaired but by then the trains were running up to 45 minutes late.
Network Rail spokeswoman Deborah Fine said: "We experienced problems with the points at Wootton Bassett at 4.15pm.
"The difficulties were rectified by our engineers by 5.27pm.
"The problem did cause some delays between Swindon and Bristol.
"And, unfortunately, there was a backlog of services."
She added that the trains had continued to run between 20 and 45 minutes late until the middle of the evening.
