A CHARITY that operates a helpline for rape victims has issued its own call for help.
Victim Support Wiltshire says 12 new volunteers are needed to staff its rape support line.
Although it currently has about 50 volunteers on its books, many cannot work certain shifts.
Now bosses warn that if volunteers are not found soon the service may be axed.
Last year the charity, which has offices in both Swindon and Devizes, handled 900 calls.
Co-ordinator Liz Lynch said the helpline was a valuable resource for the town and should not be overlooked.
"We opened the line in 1997 and it's been well used ever since," she said.
"Unfortunately, we now lack volunteers to answer the calls. This could mean that we may have to cancel shifts or withdraw it completely.
"Many victims of sexual abuse spend a long time plucking up the courage to pick up the phone.
"If they get an answerphone message instead of a person, they may just decide to hang up and it would all have been for nothing."
Last year six per cent of all calls that came in were from male victims.
Ms Lynch said: "Men are more reluctant than women to report this sort of crime, which is why it's so vital that they have a helpline such as this to call.
"Our volunteers do not give advice. Instead they listen to what callers have to say before informing them of their options.
"Callers do not even have to give their name and we operate a completely confidential service."
Anyone aged over 18 is eligible to become a volunteer. All they are required to pledge is two three-hour shifts a week.
Volunteers, both male and female, are needed from all backgrounds. Full training will be given in November.
l The Rape Support Line is open during the following times: Tuesday: 7pm to 10pm; Thursday: 9.30am to 12.30pm, 7pm to 10pm; Sunday: 2pm to 4pm. Its number is 0808 800 1144. Anyone thinking of volunteering is asked to call Victim Support Wiltshire on 01380 729476.
