Ref. 71694-104A Honda worker who has organised a sponsored bike ride in aid of charity WaterAid says the crisis in Sudan has made his fundraising more important than ever.

Fergal McGrath, a 32-year-old mountain bike fanatic from Wills Avenue, Swindon, is looking for mountain bikers to take part in a ride on the Ridgeway on Sunday, September 12.

He has already received 20 entries, but would like to reach 200 all with sponsorship from family and friends.

Fergal has designed two off-road routes starting from Barbury Castle, giving riders the chance to choose a 25km or 50km course depending on their energy or ability.

Leaving at 10am, riders will follow the Ridgeway along ancient byways, tracks and bridleways on a scenic route through the Downs.

He chose to raise money for WaterAid after hearing about its work in helping people in the developing world get access to clean drinking water.

And he said the famine in war-torn Sudan meant help was needed urgently.

"There is a crisis in Sudan with a lack of clean water. WaterAid is overwhelmed trying to secure clean water.

"If we only raise enough cash to build and sustain one well then that will be enough for 500 people," he said.

Entry to the bike ride is £5 in advance or £10 on the day, and Honda has donated a mountain bike to be presented to the rider who manages to collect the most sponsorship.

For more information on how to enter the ride go to www.ridetheridgeway.co.uk, or call Fergal on 01793 337040 at evenings or weekends.
