WHEN the University of Bath and the New Swindon Company claim that the proposed educational facility cannot be accommodated in the town centre, the calculations are based on finding land for single storey buildings, apart from the 3,000 student accommodation block.

Given that four-storey buildings would only require a quarter of the land-take, there are suitable sites available in the town centre.

Moreover, the Oakfield Campus could readily swallow up the entire teaching facility.

K Head suggested (EA, July 20) that the Burmah site could be a university campus. Indeed when Swindon was being considered for a university about 50 years ago, this was the preferred location. The plot available in Pipers Way is large enough to accommodate all the university's needs including some playing fields.

So don't be hoodwinked into believing that it is Coate or nothing.
