TWO popular recreation areas near Salisbury will be protected from now on by a newly-appointed countryside ranger.

Leo Wirtz has been appointed senior ranger by Wiltshire county council to look after and improve a number of parks, woodlands and recreation areas in the county including the Figsbury Rings car park and Woodhenge picnic area.

His job will involve maintaining, improving and publicising sites under his care to help ensure everyone can benefit from them.

Figsbury Rings is just outside Salisbury off the London Road and the car park area provides access to the National Trust site which is an Iron Age hill fort and has excellent views over the countryside.

Woodhenge picnic area is next to the scheduled ancient monument off the A345 south of Durrington. It comprises a car park with four picnic benches and gives access to countryside around Stonehenge and Woodhenge.
