ANDY KING insists 'it can only get better' after a bunch of happy Hatters extended Town's pointless start to the campaign.
The County Ground boss saw his team crash 3-2 at home to Mike Newell's Luton last night, a result which leaves his troops third from bottom in the embryonic Coca-Cola League One table.
Two games and two defeats hardly constitutes a crisis and while extremely disappointed by early results, King remains calm.
He said: "We have to get things back on track. We started well last year, we've started poorly this year.
"But the resemblance of a good side is there.
"There is hope and it can only get better.
"A half-decent side punished us for our mistakes on this occasion."
While the manager is confident that his team have what it takes to kick-start their season, one member of the squad admits they cannot simply expect it to happen.
Midfielder Brian Howard knows there is plenty of silk in the side but admits perhaps a shade more steel is needed in the early stages of games to prevent opponents feeling encouraged.
He said: "Maybe our downfall at times is that we don't get our foot in early enough.
"We know we have the skills to beat teams but that on its own isn't enough.
"We have to earn the right to play.
"We were left shell-shocked in the first-half against Luton, fought back in the second and I think we gradually put them under more and more pressure.
"Set plays and a penalty have cost us again though.
"We seem to switch off in those situations.
"It happened to me in the first-half, fortunately the lad has put it wide on that occasion, but we weren't so lucky at the start of the second half when they've made it 3-1.
"It's too easy to score against us as a team at the moment and we need to put that right, and quickly.
"It's a question of getting back out on the training ground, working hard and making sure we do all we can to make things difficult for the opposition."
