Action from Laverstock's opening Wessex League Division Three game with Hamble Club. DA6134P2THE opening day of the Sydenhams Wessex League campaign brought mixed fortunes for the area's sides in Division Three.

Laverstock & Ford suffered a 1-0 defeat at home to Hamble.

Kevin Booth's 75th minute goal denied Gino Nardiello's team a share of the spoils.

Fellow Salisbury outfit Dave Coleman AFC were on the wrong end of a 7-0 scoreline away to Fleetlands.

Mark Peach registered the first hat-trick of the season while Richie Swallow (2), Simon Everett and Lee Baldincinno were also on target.

However, Verwood Town got their season off to a flier by beating Hampshire Divi-sion One champions Colden Common 2-0.

With three first-teamers unavailable, the early exchanges indicated that Town could be up against it in the searing heat.

A makeshift defence soaked up plenty of pressure, and despite riding their luck at times Verwood held on well before stinging the home side on 30 minutes.

Andrew Wooding collected the ball on the edge of the area and showed good pace and skill to beat his marker and surge into the box.

The striker cooly placed a low shot past the 'keeper which went in off the far post.

Verwood hung on until the break, but started the second half much the stronger side and were further rewarded after 62 minutes when Luke Homer lobbed Common's stranded 'keeper from outside the box.

Simon Woodpack was kept busy in the Town goal towards the end, but pulled off a series of excellent saves to keep the two-goal margin intact.
