Corsham Town were without prolific goal scorer Alan Griffin but still managed a 2-0 victory over Swindon Supermarine last Thursday evening.
This came as good news to manager Colin Bush as last season Supermarine were two divisions above Corsham. He said: "I was very pleased with the performance as they had a couple of lads on trial from Forest Green. I was delighted with the fitness levels and this was a good test for my team."
Dave Killmurrey opened the scoring from a Jamie Lyons cross. The first half was contested well by both teams. Supermarine could not find the back of the net and the teams went into the break with the score at 1-0.
For the first 15 minutes Supermarine looked the better side and got stuck into Corsham. They looked the stronger side but Corsham got players behind the ball and held well at the back to keep the boys from Swindon from equalising.
Corsham started to establish themselves and after 20 minutes of the second half they doubled their lead. Alan Webb, who was on trial, toe poked the ball in from a headed flick from Colin Towler.
Bush has now decided to sign Webb. The midfielder has only played in two of the pre-season matches and has scored in both. Bush said: "He scored a good goal. He can play in several positions and that will help me. He may be getting his debut earlier than he thinks."
From there Corsham looked comfortable and held on for the win.
Bush swapped his keepers with half hour to go, bringing on Craig Chaplin for Danny Alcroft.
Chaplin had a quiet 30 minutes except for one effort that he had to tip over the bar. Chaplin was number one last season, but because of cricket commitments and a wedding he will be unavailable for the beginning of the season. Bush said that Chaplin will have to battle hard when he returns to take the goalkeeping position off Alcroft.
Over all Bush was happy with his team. He said: "We had a good mental attitude. Both teams stood up and let out some aggression.
