Devizes achieved their best performance of the pre-season on Saturday according to manager Mark Godley.

Devizes went into the break a goal down but then put on a great 45 minutes of football to achieve a draw against a defensive Biddestone.

The long ball caused Devizes problems early as Biddestone midfielder Will Edwards slotted one home through the keeper's legs.

The players had a telling off from Godley at half time and seemed to respond as they looked like the better side. Godley said: "The hot conditions of the first half made it difficult for us. We played better in the second half."

Dave Macey pulled Devizes level. He cut through the Biddestone defence from the right and finished in excellent style to equalise.

Biddestone then took the lead with what manager Gary Skidmore described as a fluke. A loose ball bounced over the head of the Devizes keeper for youngster Adam Gainey to score.

Devizes did have the better of the game with many shots at goal. Godley said: "Their keeper pulled off some tremendous saves. Gary Campbell had a one on one which he should have put away and Davis Lloyd missed an open goal, but I think we were a better side in the second half and dominated."

Devizes left it until three minutes before full time to draw the game level. The goal came from a free kick and it was left to Nick Taylor at the back post to head in. Biddestone played very defensively and had eight players behind the ball at times.

Skidmore was pleased with his team's performance who were playing a side that were two leagues above them last year. He said: "I was delighted that we could compete against Devizes. That has given our players belief that they can play football in the Screwfix league. I think we deserved our two one lead."

Ollie Mcaninch who was a striker last year had an outstanding game in his new position at the back. Will Edwards was described by manager Skidmore as being a powerhouse in the midfield.

Godley has had a tough pre-season and was still a few players short of his ideal 11. He said: "We have a tough first game against Hallen at home on Saturday. But for the first time during this pre-season I think my team showed character."
