GAZETTE & HERALD: Residents from The Pippin are angry after discovering that just seven months after Calne's Sainsbury's store pulled plans for an extension, it has applied again.
In January residents celebrated when the supermarket behind their houses withdrew its plans but they're now on the verge of a new battle.
This time the plans will bring a single story extension right up to some of the residents' back gardens and will also knock down an old Edwardian house in Cop Croft.
Michael Childs who lives at The Pippin said that the new plans encroach on the residential area and that there was no need to knock down such an old building.
Mr Childs said: "The proposal is to put the rear extension within Sainsbury's green area which was put in as an interval between the store and the residents.
"Don't come towards the residential area, go towards the commercial area of the town.
"Why don't they make it bigger within the existing boundary of the store, within the front, so going towards the car and the car park rather than the residential area?"
Mr Child's also said he could not understand that a store increasing by 40 per cent in size would not create any more jobs and no more waste.
He said: "I'm not a mathematician but 40 per cent more trucks bring in 40 per cent more products and 40 per cent more noise and waste."
Resident Marlen Kuehnel and Dr Marc Suller purchased their house in March and said they were completely against the new proposal and that a new path proposed running next to them will have a detrimental affect to their property.
Ms Kuehnel said: "We were really surprised they have put in a new application.
"Before we bought the house we found out there was an application but that was rejected so we thought that was going to be it.
Dr Suller said: "Calne does not need a bigger Sainsbury's. I never need to queue up and it's not for Calne, it's to expand their empire."
Tracey Robbins said that the new building will come within a few feet of their bedrooms and that the noise is already too much.
"You are going to get a lot more noise. I just think if they wanted a bigger store they should have built out of town."
Paul Tunney, development programme manager for Sainsbury's, said they are committed to Calne town centre and that if the plans are approved the sales area will increase from 15,220sq ft to 23,077sq ft giving better choice for customers.
"The store at The Pippin trades well, and the increase in size, as a result of the extension will provide further choice for customers.
"The store extension will also help to provide spin-off benefits for the health and vitality of the town centre.
"The reason for extending the store towards The Pippin is so that we get a balance between providing further choice for our customers without compromising the existing car parking facilities which are used for both the store and the town centre."
A meeting between Sainsbury's planning and North Wiltshire District Council has been scheduled for Wednesday, 25 August.
Anybody wishing to write to North Wiltshire District Council to give their views now has until August 26 to submit their letter.
